Historic Interest

Origin of the name - Sir Humphrey Chetham became a wealthy textile merchant, born 1580 and residing in Crumpsall Hall, Crumpsall. After making his fortune in London in the early 1600s, he returned to Manchester and bought (nearby) Clayton Hall. Later in life he donated much money to a school for poor boys in Manchester, latterly this became Chetham's School of Music. Thus, the name is a nod to a local man who did well.
