Reopened in December 2021 following a period of closure during the middle of the Covid19 pandemic. The pub has undergone extensive refurbishment in contemporary style and the new owner has changed the name from the original Peacock to the Pigeon (reflecting the nickname given to the pub by the villagers in years gone by). It stands as one of the focal points in the market place as you enter the heart of this large village. Originally an NBC house, following the Watney's takeover, it underwent much internal and external reconstruction in the 1970's and all traces of the original separate bar areas were lost. Following this much needed refurbishment, it remains one very long open plan room, with large TV screens at either end. A pool table features at one end of the room, whilst the other end is comfortable seating. There is a courtyard garden at the back and a smoking area. This is primarily a drinkers' pub, which caters for a predominantly younger crowd in the evenings. Cask ale has disappeared from the bar following Carlsberg's "Fresh Ale" policy of replacing it with brewery conditioned beer, masquerading as real ale being served through "faux style" tall, skinny handpumps. Wainwright's Amber and Gold are misleadingly dispensed via this method.
This venue has been flagged by CAMRA volunteers as using a misleading dispense method to serve beer.
This is a 'Fresh Ale' - a keg beer served through a cask handpump. Find out more here Handpump Hijack.
If in doubt, we recommend that you Ask if it's Cask before making a purchase.
