*** Highlands & Western Isles pub opening and food service times currently vary nearly on a day-to-day basis, mostly dependent on establishments' access to bar and waiting staff. Hence you will almost certainly see different times than those published here. Please DO NOT send updates to either opening or food service times, as trying to hit a moving target is a waste of our very limited resources. Instead, overall opening and restaurant times will be updated at the next full survey. Your understanding is appreciated. We welcome notifications of 'dog friendliness' however four legs good, two legs better. As you might imagine for a website called WhatPub, the main aim is to highlight the quality of ales. Thus, please include an assessment of a pub's beer(s) when you notify us of its cynophile status! ***

The Old Forge is situated in a spectacular setting on the shore of Loch Nevis on the Knoydart peninsula, and provides an ideal location for walking the rough bounds of Knoydart.

In March 2022 it became one of only a handful of community-owned pubs in Scotland, now managed on behalf of the local community and visitors by The Old Forge Community Benefit Society.

The Old Forge relaunched in April 2022 with a focus on Scottish products, a friendly welcome and traditional Highland hospitality. Their house cask ale is supplied by Knoydart Brewery and the bar features a great selection of Scottish Gins, Rum’s Whisky’s as well as an excellent range of the usual pub staples.

Regular Scottish Traditional music sessions have been reinstated, and visitors are welcome to join in or start an impromptu session any time!

The Old Forge is known as ‘The Remotest Pub in Mainland Britain’. Knoydart is not connected to the mainland road network – it can only be reached by a seven-mile ferry crossing from Mallaig, a 16-mile hilly walk, or make use one of six moorings which welcome waterborne visitors. Info on getting there, accommodation and other services on the peninsula can be found on the Visit Knoydart website. Ferry services are provided by Western Isles Cruises.

Community Owned

Freehold Owner: Community Benefit Society. The Old Forge Community Benefit Society. Year Purchased 2022.

A community group bid to purchase the pub from the owner (who was willing to sell). The owner had put the pub up for sale for offers over £425,000 and the Old Forge Community Benefit Society (CBS) had been set up to purchase the pub. Old Forge Community Benefit Society raised over £200,000, and also received a grant of £508,000 from the Scottish Land Fund. In March 2022 the community group succeeded in completing the sale. Updates can be found here: theoldforgecbs.org and Facebook.
