This Pub is Permanently Closed
Pub closed late 2013 and converted into a Tesco Express under permitted development rights, therefore legally no planning application for change of use was needed. When a pub the public area comprised a large single room arranged in a U shape around a central bar. There was a separate function room used for live music.
Historic Interest
Historic maps show the building as The Anchor Inn, where courts were held and photographs from the early 20th century show it right next door to a second public house, The Alma, which was later demolished to create the car park for the Old Courthouse. The current building is 18th century, with many later alterations. There is a sign on the front that says it was established in 1757 by Charrington Brewery. It is included in the Local List of Buildings of Local Importance.
