Maypole, Ipswich

A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 12 Oct in 1839 states that : "All that Freehold Public House, Brewery & Land...that Well-built & much frequented Inn called the "MAYPOLE", situate in the middle of the village of Whitton, by the side of the Norwich Turnpike road & within 2 miles of the Town of Ipswich, together with an excellent BREWERY attached, (now in full trade), commodious stables & yards, large Gardens (well planted with fruit trees & bushes)....May be viewed on application to Mr DUNNING, the Proprietor & Occupier" A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on Jan-25 in 1896 when Robert Mayhew was the landlord states that : "Robert Mayhew landlord of the Maypole in Norwich Road was sued for £32 12s 6d for the damage caused when his unattended pony & trap ran into Arthur Davey's cab. Harry Whitehead landlord of the Emperor testified that Mayhew only spent 3 minutes in his pub, during which time the accident happened. Davey won the case." My Gt Grandfather, Thomas Benjamin Doole was the publican at The Whitton Maypole from about 1902 (death certificate of daughter) until at least 1913 (death certificate of wife). As a child I remember seeing one of those signs that went across the road & I recall my Granny telling me she was born there.
