The pub closed in July 2023 and was put on the market for sale. A community group Ickleton Community Pub Ltd (a Community Benefit Society) raised the funds needed to buy the Lion from Greene King. The group had until September 24th 2024, to raise £450,000 and they raised £136,000 in the first three weeks, and went on to raise £440,000 with more than 400 shareholders. The Ickleton Community Pub Ltd now plans to refurbish and reopen the Lion as a community pub with affordable food and drink. The group has received offers for 'in-kind' help from professionals to refurbish the pub. However given the level of work required on the pub, the group are not yet providing any estimate of when the pub will reopen.
