Based on three 15th century cottages, this has been an inn for over 200 years. The attractive low-beamed building is ideally situated for visiting Ashdown Forest and has two gardens for summer drinking and dining. A daily menu uses locally produced food and regular beers are local. An annual beer festival is held in May. The picturesque pub has featured in TV programmes. Pooh Bridge and a llama farm are nearby.
One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest
Listed status: Not listed
This building, faced with brick and weatherboarding, is believed to have been a pub since about 1810 (the ‘1430’ on the pub sign, presumably intended for the building itself, must be treated with a good pinch of salt). It appears to once have had three rooms (suggested by three fireplaces) but is now one long narrow bar though still retaining fittings probably of varied dates between the 1930s and 1960s. In the left-hand, low-ceilinged area there is a (disused) brick fireplace, dado panelling and a bare wooden bench. It’s hard to estimate a date for the rather nondescript counter. The right-hand area has a couple of brick fireplaces and some bench seating. At the rear left, down two steps, is a small dining room that has been brought into use. Now a food-oriented pub.
The front of the pub looks like it was originally three rooms with three fireplaces but is now one long narrow bar still retaining old fittings. The counter looks old, the bar back possibly 1960s, on the left low ceilinged area is a 1930s (or 50s?) brick fireplace (disused) and old (possibly 1930s) tongue and groove dado with bare wall bench. In the narrow middle area in front of a different, possibly 1930s, bar counter front is just one old bench and no tables. To the right the counter front is as the front part and alongside is a large 1930s brick fireplace, also disused and on the far right wall is another 1930s brick fireplace with oldish benches. At the rear left down two steps is a small dining room brought into use with a fireplace (age?). Food oriented pub.
This Pub serves 2 changing beers and 2 regular beers.
