Friendly staff always give a warm welcome at this popular free house, where exposed brickwork, original sash windows, real fire and wood-burning stove all contribute to its cosy atmosphere. The central bar houses four handpumps dispensing a well-chosen mix of cask ales, one from Rooster's brewery and three others mostly from smaller Yorkshire breweries and micros, always including a dark beer. The pub is quite small and can get very busy, booking is therefore advisable at busy times. There is comfortable seating to both sides and at the front of the pub, limited bench seating outside at the front, and a small attractive courtyard area at the back has tables, chairs and some benches under heated awnings; dogs are welcome in the outside area. A grazing menu of meat and cheese boards complements the beers and is available every day until 9pm, with pizzas served Tuesday to Thursday evenings. Coffee and home-made cakes are also available at all times. The pub enters a team in both the Bed Race in June and the Boxing Day tug of war across the adjacent River Nidd. Closed Mondays, except Bank Holidays.
