This Pub is Permanently Closed
This pub commemorates the plastic surgery unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital for burned Spitfire pilots. Plastic surgery was pioneered by Sir Archibald McIndoe at the hospital. The pub’s artifacts, at the time the pub was closed, were taken to the Queen Victoria Hospital Museum together with the pub sign of a burning Spitfire over a winged guinea pig. We understand that the site was to be developed for flats but the Town Council wished to see the site in use for community purposes. We understand that the building is in the process of being demolished - 05/09. The pub sign hangs in the foyer of the Museum, opposite The Sportsman Pub.
