This Pub is Permanently Closed
CLOSED in November 2011 and converted to a Tesco Express in 2012. This was a comfortable, wood panelled Wetherspoon's pub with separate drinking areas providing a cosy atmosphere. Terrestrial TV only, usually without the sound, but available for big games if customers wished. Fruit machines less popular since the smoking ban. Local history panels; the surrounding streets form a grid, hence the name. Experienced manager Sam(antha) Jennings (ex-Moon under Water, Norbury) had been appointed to turn the pub round after it had gone downhill, and had rightly banned a lot of louts. Good custom had begun to return after six months when she learned that Wetherspoon had actually paid Tesco to take the rest of the lease off their hands, seemingly since sales had inevitably but temporarily dropped.
