1791 Universal British Directory lists the Excise Office at the Greyhound. A report in the Bury & Norwich Post** on Apr-17 in 1805 when Mr Matthams was the landlord states that : "An inquisition was under taken at Bradfield, by the Coroner for his Liberty on ___ Matthams, son of Mr Matthams, of the Greyhound Inn (Lavenham), who on returning from a local market was thrown from his horse, & killed on the spot." A report in the Suffolk Chronicle** on Apr-10 in 1813 states that : To be sold by Auction, early in the month of May: The Black Lion Inn - High Street, Lavenham. The Greyhound Inn - High Street, Lavenham ..with butcher's shop, slaughter house & numerous attached offices, an excellent brick built malting & 14 acres of arable & pasture land. NB The above estate will be sold in 4 lots. A second report in the Suffolk Chronicle** on Apr 17 in 1813 states that the occupier is Mr Thomas MATTLAM, & the site includes a storehouse capable of holding 2000 hogshead of beer. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 08 Oct in 1823 states that : Samuel SKEET, late of the Swan Inn Lavenham, returns thanks for his 16 years residence there & (announces) that he has now removed to The Greyhound Inn, Lavenham Also listed as a posting house (in 1839) Building dates back to 1324 when it was first used as the town gaol. We don't know when it became an inn, but it was certainly 1730 or earlier. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/607
