Good Companion, Portsmouth

Opened in 1938, this large road house was built for the Brickwood's Brewery and is a prominent landmark beside the main eastern approach road into the city. Now one very large bar room, divided into various seating areas, the pub's original ceiling height has been lowered considerably to give a more intimate feel. The floor is mostly carpeted, with a tiled area running along the length of the bar counter. There are plenty of high tables and chairs nearer the bar, with more traditional tables and chairs elsewhere, as well as a number of upholstered armchairs. Large, decoratively-framed mirrors are hung on walls throughout the pub and there are also large abstract works of art prominently displayed. Piped music is played and there is a large television in the main bar area, on which sporting events are shown. A dartboard is a surprise inclusion, slightly hidden away among the dividing walls in the left-hand seating area. Gaming machines are provided, together with an ATM, close to the main entrance (withdrawal charges apply). There is ample car parking at the front of the pub, where picnic benches can also be found for those who wish to drink outside.
