Historic Interest
The Ale House Register of 1561 lists a pub in Barnston and although its location is unknown, it may have been on the same site as the Fox & Hounds. By 1822 there was a pub known as the Flag, later the Hen & Chickens by 1824 and the Black Horse by 1831; again, it is not known if this became the Fox & Hounds listed in Bagshaw’s Directory of 1850. There was certainly a pub operating on the site of the current Fox & Hounds from at least the 1820s as the Sportman’s Arms but was also known as the Fox & Hounds. It was an Argyle Brewery (later Birkenhead Brewery) pub from at least 1865 when it was named the Fox & Hounds. Pub closed in 1910, demolished and rebuilt.
