Real ale had been reinstated in late 2012 following Young's takeover from Punch (Spirit) in 2006 and it was styled as a 'bar & kitchen' more than a pub. Until 2000 it had been the Castle.

Note: the fire stables were actually behind the nearby Dog & Fox.

The pub is marketed as a restaurant and is not keen to welcome non-dining drinkers. Cask ale no longer features; an unused handpump remains as of June 2023.
