Duke of Wellington, Danby

This thriving 18th-century country inn, and previous CAMRA branch Pub of the Year, is set in idyllic countryside, close to the popular Moors National Park Centre and equally popular traditional bakery.

Satisifies all the reasonable expectations of locals, visitors and those holidaymakers enjoying the beautiful countryside.

Centrally located, with Whitby 15 miles away and the North York Moors Railway 5 miles away.

The inn was used as a recruiting post during the Napoleonic Wars. A cast-iron plaque of the first Duke of Wellington, unearthed during restorations, hangs above the fireplace.

When Grant decided to hang up his apron after 25 years service to the trade, the Duke's future was secured after it fell into the safe hands of a local family, with four generations of frequenting the pub under their belts, bought the freehold. Never in a moment did they expect to be the proud owners of this superb establishment.

Everything is still the same, the one major change has been that lunctime meals are now also served in addition to evening meals, for which the Duke has gained a deserved reputation.

Charlie, the cellar man, is still cleaning the lines after forty years service, whilst established professionals, Shane and Jay are acting as landlord and landlady / chef and front of house.

A range of interesting Yorkshire beers are served. Cider is also available, whilst perry is available Easter to October.

Well regarded for its excellent home-cooked honest wholesome meals, using local produce as far as possible.

A handy spot for visitors to the National Park visitor centre, 875m east of the pub, along the road to Lealholm.

Danby Station, on the Esk Valley line from Middlesbrough to Whitby, is 300 yards to the south.
