This Pub is Permanently Closed
In addition to the planning comments below, it was reported in Sept 2024 that Sainsbury wish to convert this site into a 6am to midnight convenience store. A licensing application by JS was approved by the Council in Sept 2024.
As of early January 2015 when the pub was reported closed, it is understood that the new owner is keeping the upstairs as a hotel but converting the current rooms into more smaller rooms. Planning app (decided) 15/01031/FULL permitted the increase in hotel rooms from 11 to 21, there's also an extension and possibly a new entrance for the hotel.
The ground floor was gutted, and a kind of 'housewares' retail shop appeared to be open. Subsequently an application for a Certificate of Lawful Existing Use or Development 15/10588/CLEUD was submitted in November 2015 by Portinex Ltd, registered office Vanterpool Plaza 2nd Floor Wickhams Cay 1 Road Town Tortola British Virgin Islands with a connection with Israeli property investor Ben Ditkovsky who controls Iron Capital Limited private company registration #08719246, for the use of the ground floor and basement as a lawful A1 Use Class (retail) unit. On the apparent facts the application was permitted June 16th 2016. It would appear that this was a sham, gaming planning law; any token retail use ended almost immediately.

As at Sept 2018 the ground floor/cellar is reported to soon become a Coop minimart. Most interior has been ripped out, but Coop claims to be trying to preserve the remaining tilework & mirrors.
Previous description follows.
Was well worth visiting for the ornate tiling and mirrors from 1901-2, lost for decades and rediscovered around 1970. Eight en-suite rooms. Food is Thai. Quiz night Sundays, free movies Monday evenings, karaoke on the last Friday of each month. Don't miss the St. Patrick's Day festivities, St. George's Day real ale festival, and the New Year's Eve party!
