Formerly known as Fitzgeralds, the pub reopened after a brief closure for a makeover, in spring 2025. The outside has been repainted and the "Fitzies" sign removed. Now known as The Canny Lad, it is labeled as an "Irish Bar" although it still retains cask ale. Six handpulls are available ; this can be increased depending on demand. The large bar area on entry is divided into discrete seating areas. The former Chart Room down some steps is a now a games room with a pool table and dart boards. There are several TV's in both rooms. In 2022 the pub celebrated 30 years inclusion in the Good Beer Guide.

There is a small sun trap beer garden at the back.
