This Pub is Permanently Closed
The pub was in Castle Street immediately behind Turner's shop (now a house) in High Street. The licensee in 1901 was John Talbot but by the time the licence was refused in 1906 the licensee was Frederick Key. The pub was owned by Salt & Co, brewers of Burton. Closure was a protracted process, the licence was refused in 1906 and compensation set, however this was appealed and in late 1906 the appeal was sent to the Inland Revenue for adjudication. The IR finally set the compensation in December 1907 and the pub closed early in 1908. In 1906 the licensing magistrates were told there was no downstairs accommodation for the family who used the taproom. The pub was subsequently demolished.
