This Pub is Closed Long Term
Following the departure of the last long-term pub tenant in 2020, the Britannia was closed for a while then re-opened for a very brief time before its final closure in March 2022. Two planning applications later, permission was granted in May 2025 for it to be converted to residential properties, a sad loss.
It was a large seafront pub with two bars (the smaller one at a slightly lower level). Super famous locally for its part in the live music scene in the 1980s and 90s with live music contiuing to the end. it was part of the Whitbread chain of pubs before being sold. Quite uniquely it had a shower cubicle, complete with clean towels, not far from the bar for any patrons who having come from bathing in the sea wished to freshen-up.
Historic Interest
Reputedly the former taproom for Cobb's Brewery. Cobb’s was situated on a large site directly behind the pub. Following the demolition of Cobb's in the 1970s the site saw some new buildings put up which included the current police station next door.
