City-centre, Grade II-listed, one-bar pub dating back to 1422, with six cask ales; three regulars and two guests. The historic Clock Tower is outside the front door. The Abbey and Verulamium Park are nearby. Internal features include a low ceiling, and real fire. Home to "Boot Cantina" offering a renowned menu of authentic tacos which has attracted national attention! Families welcome until 6pm. Still ciders available on hand pump.

Historic Interest

Witness to the Yorkist victory at the first Battle of St Albans in 1455, the Boot’s timber buildings date from as early as 1420, although a licensed inn did not appear on the site until 1719 and the pub did not occupy the whole premises until the 1960s. The Boot is a grade II listed building, as is the public telephone box beside it and in 2013 it was recognised as the first “Battlefields Pub” by the Battlefields Trust. It allegedly houses the ghost of a murdered prostitute The Boot has impressive beams upon which many a drinker has cracked their head, standing timbers, exposed wall timbers and open fire places. The walls are adorned with photos of St Albans gone-by and gentlemen will be amused by the extensive array of Private Eye magazine covers pasted above the urinals
