This Pub is Closed Long Term
This popular, much-missed country pub had served the nearby villages of Ash and Ridley since as far back as 1585. Sadly it ceased trading in 2017 and stood empty and forlorn for some years before falling victim to spontaneous combustion in 2023. Since planning permission for development as residential accommodation had by then been obtained, the fire may have benefitted the land owners by reducing the cost of demolition. No suggestion of impropriety is implied, of course.
Little is known about the history of The Anchor & Hope, save that it had operated as a coaching inn in the past. It had been rebuilt during the 19th century and enlarged in the 20th. It is believed to have been part of the Bass Charrington tied estate during the 20th century.
