This Pub is Permanently Closed

A large estate pub, which was situated at the southern end of Verdant Lane where it meets Northover and was also bordered by Whitefoot Lane and Whitefoot Terrace.

It is now an Esso service station, with ancillary services, as shown in the sign in the second picture. It had previously been a Shell service station.

The main picture, showing the pub during its heyday, appears by kind permission of Paul Skelton, owner of the Dover Kent Archive website, which contains more pictures and details of the Northover, as well as a separate entry relating to a relatively short incarnation under the name Governor General. The third picture, showing part of the front of the Governor General, is taken from the latter web page, and in turn comes from the film The Long Good Friday, which was completed in 1979.
