A converted Primitive Methodist Mission Hall, dating from 1890, located at the south end of Newport Bridge and adjacent to the former St. Cuthbert’s Church.
The property is owned by the Towers family, who have put the combined, and no doubt enjoyable experiences of over 150 years of drinking into the renovation and the on-going successful evolving formula.
Completely renovated and redecorated throughout to provide a bright and airy space which will accommodate more than a hundred in comfort.
In addition, the facilities for those less-abled, including wheelchair users, are also excellent.
The Chapel has become a thriving hub for the community.
The School Room has also been renovated, while the Sancutary Sports Bar is now up and runniing and serving seven additional craft beers.
Both grassed and hard standing outside areas are also available for those sunnier days.
Disabled access and accessible toilets have also been provided. In addition, a defibrillator has been made available, close to the front door, for use by everybody.
Besides the Sanctuary, in the Chapel itself there are six handpulls, running from light beers to dark beers, right to left on a rotating guest beer policy, including stouts and porters.
In addition, seven craft beers, a house lager brewed by Camerons, and a German Pilsner brewed under Germany's 512 year old purity laws, are also served. These are displayed, by number, on the hymn boards.
A variety of real ciders are also served, as well as bar nibbles.
Third pint glasses are served in bespoke miniature pews. "Take a pew", now takes on a complete new meaning.
Pints, halves, schooners and thirds can be bought.
Besides the hymn boards, other original features have been retained as far as possible, including the organ, and which is awaiting to be used by any drinkers who are thus talented. While the bar itself is the re-puposed alter table.
Regular music nights are organised, as are comedy nights and beer festivals.
The Hungry Monk serves burgers, parmos and pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings, whilst on Sunday lunchtimes a typical Yorkshire Roast is served, with vegetarian and both larger and smaller appetite options available.
The active Facebook page is kept up-to-date with what is going on in support of the local community, with beer and cider festivals now a regular occurence.
There is plenty of free adjacent car parking and bus stops east and west, within 100 yards, providing regular links to Stockton and Middlesbrough town centres.
It is about a 30 minute walk from the pub to the Riverside Stadium for Boro's home games, though you may be able to jump on a bus for half that journey. However, for 2025-26 season, the pub is now providing a bespoke bus service to the ground.
Local 2026 CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year, with the award presentation planned for the Saturday afternoon of the easter Beer Festival, 4th April 2026.
The proactive owners are always undergoing a programme of continuous improvement to the evolving formula. For 2026, the project is to substantially enhance the outdoor play areas, and the outdoor drinking and smoking areas.
Though advertised as being closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, please see Facebook for additional opening sessions, and mainly for televised Boro and England football games.
