Previously a tapas bar, it became Max's in December 2014 and had an official opening in February 2015 after a complete refurbishment. In January 2023 the main business of Max's moved to a Commercial Road premises and in September 2023 the Oxford Road premises was boarded up.

Autumn 2024 saw the pub's re-emergence as Smokin' Barrels. Awaiting new survey.
