Historic Interest

Former Commercial Inn & posting house. A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on 16 Apr in 1814 states the : Auction of the White Hart Inn, Saxmundham; apply to Robert MULLEY or R. STOPHER, Saxmundham. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Mar-18 in 1848 when John Lincoln was the landlord states that: "Frederick Reade stole a silver spoon & a Bagatelle ball from the pub. He was found guilty a sentenced to be transported for 7 years." A report in the Ipswich Journal*** on 11 Nov in 1882 states that : The White Hart Hotel, Saxmundham has now been taken over by Miss Lydia & Miss Mary SILLET. The former, had been in the bar for upwards of 11 years & for the past 5 or 6 years, had the entire management of household affairs. To celebrate the event, with her sister, a tea was arranged, which owing to the number of tickets sold, nearly 150, was held in the Market Hall. For a period of nearly 40 years, it has been run by Mr John LINCOLN, who died some weeks ago. Messrs. COBBOLD placed 3 dozen bottles of wine on the table.
