Built in 1617 as the Stocks Inn on the site of an older hostelry, this historic Grade ll listed pub was also known as the Union Cross. To the rear it incorporates New House, a building of 1736, which has an exterior stone panel carved with the figures of what appears to be a Quaker man and woman. The chimney of the older building is dated 1636 although the stonework at the front of the building is Victorian. Inside, the style is traditional but bright, smart and comfortable with a semi-open plan. You enter a pair of rooms, with a real fire on the right, beyond which is a large standing area in front of the bar where pictures of old Heptonstall inhabitants decorate the walls. Further on, there's a long room, created from the three 1736 cottages, now containing tables, settles and a large area for the pool table.

It has been reported that half pints attract a large markup.
