This Pub is Permanently Closed

The Rock is believed to have opened as a beer house in around 1867 in what had previously been a chapel. It was so called as the building had been erected on a rocky outcrop, parts of which were visible both inside and outside the building.

One of the images (thanks to www.dover-uk.com for sharing) suggests that it may at one time have been part of the tied estate of Westerham Brewers Bushell, Watkins & Smith Ltd. It subsequently became an Ind Coope house after takeover, and eventually became free of tie. Sadly however its days were numbered and time was called permanently in 1990. The site is now residential, but the name of the new street, Tavern Close, at least acknowledges the past.
