There has been a pub on this site since the 15th century; the current building was built in 1904 for Chesters brewery. A large building with two areas decorated to a very high standard in subtle, calming shades. As you enter, you are greeted by a small segment of the large bar. To the right of this is a seating area with booths and discrete tables, decorated with wooden panelling, meanwhile on the left side is a further comfortable seating area, this time with bare-brick decor,. A further seating area with its own bar is downstairs (the toilets are also here), this is styled as the "Den"; this area works as a sports bar as it features TV screens, etc. There are some interesting old photos of the pub abound along with other artefacts scattered around. The pub features live bands from time to time. Closest pub to the Air Raid Shelter Tour.

Historic Interest

Reopened 31/5/2024. Plans put forward 6/7/2022 to allow the ground floor and basement of the building to operate once more as a pub. Planning Application DC/084387 | Internal and external alterations to facilitate reuse of The White Lion Public House as a public house (sui generis use) and provision of ancillary outside seating area. Granted 29/6/2022. In 2020, the upper storeys were converted to apartments this under the auspices of Stockport Metro BC, Closed 14/6/2009. The building was deteriorating and had been reportedly vandalised inside. This town centre landmark returned to selling cask beer in 2008. Former Chesters house. Built in 1904, it is described by Historic England as a ‘hearty blend of late medieval and Baroque features in a typically exuberant Edwardian fashion’.

Restoration

There has been a pub on this site since the 15C. The current building dates from 1904 and is a blend of late medieval and Baroque features in exuberant Edwardian style. It has been renovated and reopened in mid-2024 after being closed for fifteen years and suffering significant deterioration. The modern decor is attractive while honouring the pub's historic past. There are three large areas for drinkers. To the right is a performance space that features occasional live music, plus TV screens. To the left is comfortable seating and a lower area has a more intimate feel. Old photos of the pub and various artefacts decorate rooms and walls. An impressive room upstairs is available for hire. The pub serves real ale and meals.
