This Pub is Closed Long Term

Large single roomed establishment situated next to the Nottingham Ice Arena. It is on one of the major arterial routes out of the city. The pub gets very busy when the Ice Hockey team, the Nottingham Panthers, are playing at home. At the rear is a terraced garden area, unusual for a city pub, and rightly described as a hidden gem.

Historic Interest

Built as the Nottingham Castle in 1967 for Tennant Brothers of the Exchange Brewery in Sheffield. CA/PL/ 19/6/67: plans dated 14 April 1967 for a new public house on Lower Parliament Street, adjacent to an existing pub, for Tennant Brothers, Exchange Brewery, Sheffield. The architect was M. W. Ofield of Sheffield, who had extended the Salutation (one of Nottingham’s three central pubs that claim a medieval origin) for Tennants in 1958, when he was cited as their in-house architect. The engineers were a Mr Prentzas and Professor W. Eastwood, both of Sheffield University, and the concrete construction was novel, claims the current landlord, Jerry Scott.
Built on the site of housing and an existing pub of the same name to the left that was then demolished. The application was approved on 10 June 1967 for plans dated April that year, after unauthorised work was reported on site on 7 April. A condition of the permission was that there should be no extraneous advertising on the main elevation. The site of the existing pub was conveyed to the corporation as part of a road-widening scheme, so no car parking was possible. The Guardian Journal, 15 November 1968, records the opening that day. The plans show a large ‘public room’ to the front entered from the right, where a lobby also leads to a smaller ‘public room’ to the rear with a garden and paved terrace. The two bars, which were not distinguished on the plans by any name or function, were served by a ‘T’-shaped service area and a single set of lavatories. To the left of the front elevation, a private entrance leads to a boiler house and beer cellar. There is a three-bedroom flat over the front part, entered from a narrow door at the far right-hand side of the street elevation. The interior has been opened up into a single space with a conservatory to the rear, with a new bar and new lavatories. (Elain Harwood {Historic England} / C20 East Midlands).

More recently, name changes have been made from the Nottingham Castle to the Castle and then to the Nottingham Legend.

As at November 2017, freehold NT151743 was held by Punch Partnerships (PML) Limited [Reg. No. 3321199]. On the 5th March 2018, it was transferred to Patron Capital.
