This was the cellar bar of the Ship and Shovel, so called because coal used to be carried by the shovel load as it was unloaded from Newcastle.
Historic Interest
Grade II listing:- Mid C19, classical building of gault brick with painted dressings. 3 storeys plus slated mansard. 3 windows. Pilastered ground storey with entablaeture topped by pair of pedestals and 2 acroteria. Arched, wooden framing to windows and doors with decorated glass, and floor windows corniced or pedimented. End floor sill band. Modelled entablature and parapet. Interior plain but little altered.
