This Pub is Permanently Closed

Closed in 1992, subsequently destroyed by fire and redeveloped into housing.

The Anchor was located at the junction of Manor Road, Oxenden Road and The Street in Tongham on the north side of the old railway line. There had been a pub on this site since 1849 when Stephen Powell was the Innkeeper. The building dated from 1745 when there is a record of it being leased by Richard Smith to William Hills. It was thought that it was converted from a private dwelling into an Inn, so it could provide refreshment to constructors, operators and passengers of the railway which had recently arrived in Tongham.
