Night Club & Bar.
Former Variety Theatre, built in 1913, later becoming a Cinema. it has had many incarnations over the last 20 years including: New York New York, Martha's Vineyard, Pop, Hub, and latterly Amber Lounge. Recently changed ownership and re-opened following extensive refurbishment. Imposing building on the corner of Moorgate Street and Ship Hill. Now fully refurbished and reopened as a music venue under it's original name Empire, which was a theatre and cinema. Opening hours vary, depending on what entertainment is on.
Historic Interest
Originally built as the Empire Variety Theatre in 1913, but by the early 1920s, it became a cinema, a use which continued into the 1990s, laterly as the Essoldo and finally the Classic. Reopened as the New York, New York pub and Martha's Vineyard, before becoming a late night bar under various names. Now tastefully restored by Mark McGrail and returned to the Empire name. Primarily a music venue with varying opening hours.
