Situated next to Shropshire Council’s HQ stands Lord Hill’s Column, the tallest Doric column in England. This was built between 1814 and 1816 to commemorate Lord Rowland Hill, who famously fought alongside Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo and others. The Lord Hill Hotel is about a mile outside the Shrewsbury town centre in the shadow of this monument, and is an AA-rated 3 star hotel with some 35 en-suite bedrooms. The bar is open to the public as well as hotel guests and, amidst the fonts selling the usual national keg drinks, there are two real ale handpumps dispensing Salopian Brewery’s Shropshire Gold plus another ale, usually from the same brewery. The Lord Hill is very popular with wedding parties and funerals, and is also used extensively by the local Rotary and Lions Clubs. So it can get very busy at times. The price paid, together with the ambience and décor, reflects the fact that this is a hotel and not a local boozer!

The Hotel has been sold for re-development, and will cease trading on 31st Dec 2019.

Until then it will operate normally.
