Former Men Only Room. by Michael Slaughter

The pub has strong sporting connections and is one of the oldest in Wakefield and has had the same name since 1882. A former Tetley Heritage pub, comprising four cosy rooms, two are available mid-week for private functions at no charge; a family room is available until 8 pm. When the tap-room had a door, this had a sign saying "Gents Only. As the pub does no food you were welcome to bring reasonable food in but if it was fish & chips or a curry you'd have been expected to eat them in the beer garden!

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

A old corridor-centred pub which evolved out of vernacular stone cottages, What stands out here is the authentic layout, the old back-left lounge and, above all, the splendidly-unaltered tap room (still with its 'Gents Only' sign from the not-so-distant past!). Tetley's, the pub's owners for more than a century, gave the Redoubt their 'Heritage' badging in 1985 but went on to completely refit the servery, including enlargement of the corridor hatch. The decorative windows to the front bar are also their late twentieth century work.
