This Pub is Closed Long Term

The original building dated from 16th century, but was destroyed during the town's great fire in 1688. Closed since 2014. on 18/08/23, a planning application was lodged for conversion of the site to 11 Apartment Hotel suites and The Odd Fellows Hall into 3 houses.

Historic Interest

Former Commercial inn, Family hotel & Posting House. A report in the Ipswich Journal on 09 Aug 1815 states that: Died, 07 Aug 1815, Mrs DARKE, widow of the late Mr Wm. DARKE, formerly of the King's Head Inn, Bungay & of the Angel Inn, Yarmouth. In 1823 the "Times" coach left daily at 7pm for Beccles & other coaches left at 1pm on Sun, Tue & Thu for Bury & at 3pm on Mon, Wed & Fri for Yarmouth. A report in the Ipswich Journal in 1849 (Aug-11) when Charles Capon was landlord stated: Capon owed ÂŁ163.14 to a bancrupt, the bancrupt had a total debt of ÂŁ163.14. A report in the Ipswich Journal in Apr 1850 states that: Died on the 21st, aged 18 months, Alice, third daughter of Mr Capon, of the King's Head Inn, Bungay. A report in the Ipswich Journal in 1861 (Oct-12) when Charles Capon was landlord stated: The Kings Head had provided the dinner for the Suffolk & Norfolk Institutes of Archaeology at a meeting in Bungay. In 1874 an omnibus was provided to the station to meet every train. A report in the Ipswich Journal in Oct 1880 states that: Died on the 23rd Mrs Roper, aged 59, widow of Mr John Roper of the King's Head Inn. In Sep/Oct 1982 edition of Last Orders it was reported that Jeff & Julie have been here for a year with Adnams bitter & live bands.
