Historic Interest

Operating by 1839 by Robert Hiscock, taken over by the Cook Brothers in 1848. In August 1865, Cook Brothers’ Argyle Brewery merged with Aspinall’s Anchor Brewery to form to form Birkenhead Amalgamated Brewery. The company changed name to Birkenhead Brewery Company Limited in March 1872 and continued operating on the two sites. The brewery advertised that its beers were for use by families and they would deliver free by its own drays and the drayman would stillage and tap the casks.

In 1948 the brewery acquired Mackie & Gladstone with 40 off licenses and in 1951 acquired Moorhouse Brothers mineral water producers. Birkenhead Brewery merged with Threlfall Chesters Brewery in 1962 and was taken over by Whitbread in 1967. The brewery in Oxton Road ceased brewing in the mid 1960s and was later demolished but there has been no redevelopment on the site. The brewery offices on the other side of Oxton Road are now occupied by a motorcycle dealer. The old photo shows the brewery looking down Oxton Road with the Observatory pub in the background.
