Historic Interest
An Argyle Brewery, later Birkenhead Brewery pub dating back to at least 1864. The photo is courtesy of Helen Wood whose great grandfather, Thomas Ryan, was licensee from 1910 until the pub was destroyed by bombing on 12-13 March 1941. On the night of the bombing Thomas Ryan, his family and his customers survived by sheltering in the pub cellar. The second photo shows the site of the pub following the bombing. Among those who survived was Thomas's son Frank who went on to be licensee of the Bank of Ireland. The third photo is probably from the 1880s.
