Extensively refurbished for an upmarket “opulent” feel, the anchor is definitely an alfresco gastro pub, specialising in high quality. Set in beautiful surroundings and right next to a local public footpath to Thurstaton it is frequented by tourists and locals alike. Extensive outside areas provide alternative seating during the warmer months.
Historic Interest
Part of the pub was once a 17th Century cottage which became a pub as long ago as 1774 and known as the Anchor Inn by at least the 1820s. Listed in Bagshaw's Directory of 1850. Listed in Sulley's The Hundred of Wirral in 1889 and owned by Rev T Peters of Gloucester who sold a leasehold interest to Birkenhead Brewery in 1901. Run by the same family from 1789 until 1940 when the pub was sold to Birkenhead Brewery at auction for ÂŁ12,200. Described in 1980 a a small friendly pub serving Whitbread Special Cask Bitter by handpump.
