Originally built c1815 and called the White Horse until 1832 (it was a watering-hole for horses). Rebuilt in the 1894 by the New Westminster brewery, whose premises were situated a short distance away in Earl Street. Now a welcoming single-bar pub, with a fine, long wooden bar and bar back.
Last refurbed in summer 2025, the bar area now has plush velvet and leather banquettes and intimate booths, framed by handmade stained-glass screens. Antique lighting and hand-painted traditional wall coverings complement the decor.
The food menu includes bar snacks, sandwiches, weekend brunch, and main-menu pub favourites. Four handpumps provide at least three ales from the Shepherd Neame range.
Restoration
Built early C19 and originally a watering-hole for horses, rebuilt at the end of the century. Now a single-bar pub after refurbishment in 2025, with a bespoke long bar and bar back made from reclaimed oak. There are swish velvet and aged leather banquettes and private seating in rear booths framed by handmade stained-glass screens. Drinkers can also admire a full-height fireplace made from reclaimed timber and a traditional hand painted Lincrusta wall finish. The decor creates a pleasing space with restrained colours completed by extensive use of old-looking wood, such as the herringbone floor, and antique light fittings. The brewery has also restored the original tiled facade and there is a new hand painted sign.
