Historic Interest

Listed in John Stotts 1977 guide to Good Beer in Bolton as selling Burtonwood Bitter and Mild (E), with Juke Box, snacks. Overpowering décor but interesting stained glass windows of Luddites burning down mills. The pub was listed in the selective 1980 Greater Manchester Beer Guide. In May 1981 this was a Burtonwood pub selling Dark Mild and Bitter (E), it was also included on a Burtonwood Pub list in October 1981. It was included in the Bolton Beer Guide of 1989 as selling Burtonwood Bitter and Mild (H). In January 2001 it was selling Burtonwood Bitter and Bank Top Fred's Cap, but by March 2002 it was Burtonwood Top Hat. By 2010 it was a Marston's Pub and was selling three beers from their range. By March 2014 there had been a change in landlord and the cask beers had been reduced to two. Around 2018/19 Marstons sold the pub to Hawthorn Leisure who soon became part of Admiral Taverns, there were a succession of changes in operators including Artisan Pub Company and One Vision Group, whilst Covid did not help their cause the pub closed on 01/10/24 and was sold to Thistlewood Properties who will no doubt have plans for housing rather than reopening as a pub. What will become of the historical unique windows is not yet resolved but hopefully will have a positive outcome rather than a trip to the tip!
