Opening limited and erratic. Usually open Saturday and Sunday. Food is usually only for residents. Telephoning ahead is advised. If no one answers they are probably in the kitchen and can't hear the phone - leave a message.

The inn dates from 1615 and is beloved of generations of hikers and potholers. Well-worn paths run from here to both Whernside (Yorkshire's highest peak) and Ingleborough (its best known). Restored in 2001 with great care: soft furnishings are eschewed in favour of woodwork (in a variety of sorts) and some exposed limestone stonework. There is a sugar sculpture exhibition in the bar.
