Attractive partly thatched 3-bar pub including a pool room and a lounge bar that features an inglenook.
One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest
Listed status: II
Thatched 17th century pub retaining elements of a 1930s refit. The little altered public bar has a parquet floor, panelled ceiling on the left and a full height baffle / draught screen by the door. Also dating from the refit are the curved counter and the upper part of the bar-back with mirrored back and good columns holding up the shelves. Curved bench seating is attached to the dado panelling around the bay window with more either side of the counter: also a brick fireplace painted cream and 'Gentlemen' sign on the door which both look to be inter-war. The lounge has an interesting ceiling and a brick fireplace, whose inlaying with bottles suggests a 1950s/60s date. Elsewhere in here and in the back room there is little of period interest.
Thatched 17th century pub that still retains much from a refitting in the 1930s. On the right is the little altered public bar with parquet floor, panelled ceiling on the left painted white, and a full height baffle / draught screen by the door painted black. This traditional bar has an old, possibly 1930s curved counter, bar back upper part could be 1930s with mirrored back and good columns holding up the shelves. There is curved bench seating attached to the dado panelling around the bay window all painted black and more either side of the bar counter: also a brick fireplace painted cream and 'Gentlemen' sign on the door which all look to date from the 1930s.
The door on the front middle of the pub may have been the off-sales? (combined with lounge now). The lounge on the left with an interesting ceiling still retains a 1930s brick inglenook fireplace (but has bottles inlaid into the brick so is it more 1950s/early 1960s?) but the bar counter and bar back are modern. At the rear is a small separate games room still with hatch service but no other old fittings, but signs there could have been an inglenook fireplace here. Note the old benches in the lobby from the car park.
The Champion Beer of Britain is one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world. It is the ultimate honour for UK brewers and has helped put many into the national spotlight.
Judging for the competition takes around a year, starting with individual nominations from CAMRA members and tasting panel nominations, leading to a series of rigorous regional heats adhering to a strict blind tasting policy.
