Near-normality for Welsh pubs from 7 August welcomed by CAMRA

Responding to the First Minister Mark Drakeford’s announcement that, subject to the state of the pandemic nearer the time, most of the remaining coronavirus restrictions in Wales will be lifted by 7 August, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona commented:

“The prospect of ending restrictions like table service and limits on numbers meeting will be welcomed by publicans and pub-goers across Wales.

“Not only will removing restrictions give all our pubs and social clubs the chance to trade at a normal capacity and turn a profit, it will also see the much-anticipated return of the authentic pub experience with people ordering from, and chatting at, the bar.

“We’re urging everyone to support their local pubs, social clubs and the great local breweries that serve them in the weeks and months ahead, so our great Welsh pubs can recover, thrive and continue to play a vital role at the heart of community life up and down the country.

“CAMRA are continuing to urge the Welsh Government to provide financial support for pubs as they recover from the pandemic, to give our locals better protection from demolition or conversion without planning permission, and for the UK Government to change the rate of duty on draught beer served in pubs to help them compete with supermarkets.”
