Get to grips with beer tasting with beer sommelier Jane Peyton
CAMRA has launched a new video guide on its Learn & Discover platform helping its members get to grips with beer tasting.
An “Introduction to tasting beer” has been compiled by author and drinks educator Jane Peyton, founder of the School of Booze and Beer Day Britain. In it, she sets out how beer lovers can begin to describe the flavours and palate experiences of beer, in relation to the ingredients and processes that have gone into brewing it.
The tutorial covers the ingredients of beer and what characteristics they bring to the final product, tips about running a beer tasting and the different ways to pick up taste profiles, as well as putting these to the test with three different beers.
Jane says: “We all know what we like. We buy, we taste. We love or reject what we drink and build our own repertoire of favourites. It’s not always easy to articulate exactly why like what we taste. I hope this video guide helps beer fans from all walks of life learn more about the processes and ingredients that go into their favourite brews and how they can pick up on some of the more subtle taste profiles in their beer, and helps them elevate their beer knowledge.”
CAMRA’s online learning platform is home to lots of new content from writers, educators and experts. There will be new guides, articles, videos and audio content added every week exploring everything there is to know about beer, cider, perry and pubs.
Alex Metcalfe, CAMRA’s Learn & Discover Manager says: “Jane is a well-known beer broadcaster, pub expert, writer and public speaker, and I am delighted that she has brought her wealth of experience and knowledge to CAMRA’s Learn & Discover platform. I hope viewers will pick up something new from the “Introduction to tasting beer”, and that it will prepare them for beer tastings and trying plenty of new brews in the future!”
The tasting video will also be complimented by a podcast episode which explains how to taste beer and cider featuring Natalya Watson and James Finch. The episode will go live on 20 October and available via the Pubs. Pints. People. podcast on Spotify, Acast and Apple Podcast.
All new content includes free intros and tasters so visitors to the site can get a feel for the full access enjoyed by CAMRA members. To access member-only content, CAMRA members simply need to sign in at the top of the webpage with their membership number and password. Non-members can join the campaign for just £26.50*/year.
