CAMRA’s platform promotes hop education

The Campaign For Real Ale’s (CAMRA) educational platform, Learn & Discover, has collaborated with Coalition Brewing’s head brewer Charlotte Cook for a new article about hop compounds.

Fresh after winning the Best Corporate Beer Communication award from the British Guild of Beer Writers in November, CAMRA’s Learn & Discover site has released its latest bespoke educational content, giving a detailed, scientific understanding of hop chemistry, flavours and aromas.

The award-winning Learn & Discover website is home to an expansive library of guides, articles, videos and audio material from esteemed writers, educators and industry experts, exploring everything there is to know about beer, cider, perry, social clubs and pubs.

For beer connoisseurs wishing to deep dive even further into their favourite drink, the latest hop compound guide is available exclusively for CAMRA members*.

Understanding Hop Compounds by Charlotte Cook is arguably the most in-depth Learn & Discover article to date. It is key for a brewer to understand how to best utilise the hops available to them, and that requires a knowledge of the chemistry of hops. Learn all about alpha acids, terpenoids, thiols and how they affect the flavour of beer.

Charlotte Cook is head brewer at Coalition brewery in South London and has a Master of Science degree in brewing science. With over 13 years of brewing experience, including Cloudwater Brew Co. in Manchester and Põhjala brewery in Estonia, she is one of the UK’s most respected voices in the beer industry.

Light-hearted images by Leeds based illustrator Christine Jopling accompany Charlotte’s writing, providing a visually appealing joviality to the comprehensive piece.

Alex Metcalfe, CAMRA’s Learning & Discovery Manager, said: “All the collaborators for Learn & Discover are experts in the industry and Charlotte Cook demonstrates her mastery of brewing with aplomb. I am thoroughly impressed with the expertise shown within the new article, and it is a great addition to the platform’s catalogue.

“For such a detailed guide to be released so soon after winning a major British Guild of Beer Writers award shows that CAMRA is not easing off the pedal. There will be more incredible content published before the end of the year, and 2024 will hold yet more fantastic pieces for both CAMRA members and the wider public to enjoy and engage with.”
