Brush up on Belgian beers with Jane Peyton at the Red (On)Lion

For more information, contact press@camra.org.uk or 017272 337 863

Beer sommelier Jane Peyton will be hosting a free tasting of Belgium’s singular beer styles, on Tuesday 5 May at 6 pm.

Hosted at the Red (On)Lion, a new virtual pub created by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) which allows beer lovers to converge over a pint of their favourite drink, this tasting is the third in CAMRA’s ‘Tasty Tuesdays’ sessions.

Free and open to the public, the event will be limited to the first 50 participants to sign up. The session will give you a taste of five Belgian beers representing different beer styles, with the guidance of an award-winning writer and drinks educator.

To join the fun and drink along with Jane, participants are encouraged to order the beers in advance. The beers you will need for this tasting can all be found at Beers of Europe: https://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/

  • Kriek by Brouwerij Boon (Style – Kriek, sometimes known as Cerise depending on which brewery brewed it)
  • Duchesse de Bourgogne by Brouwerij Verhaeghe (Style – Flanders Red Ale)
  • Orval by Brasserie d’Orval (Style – it’s unique, this is the only one!)
  • Mariage Parfait by Brouwerij Boon (Style – Gueuze)
  • Dubbel by Westmalle (Style – Dubbel Abbey, a Trappist beer)

A note from Jane: If you want to join the tasting but cannot get those exact breweries then I suggest any Belgian Kriek/Cerise, or Geuze. If the Duchesse de Bourgogne is out of stock then I recommend the Flanders Red Ale from Rodenbach. If Rodenbach is out of stock then try an Oude Bruin style beer – it is similar to Flanders Red. With Orval, there is no alternative I’m afraid, it is a singular beer style. If you cannot get Orval then try any Trappist beer such as Chimay or Achel and during the tasting let me know if you have one of the alternatives and I can talk about them too.

To sign up simply visit theredonlion.co.uk and click ‘Join’ – up to 50 participants can get involved, and it will be on a first come, first serve basis. You will receive a code by email which you can use to enter the presentation on the date.

Beer tutor Jane Peyton says: The Belgian brewers who harness wild yeast fermentation produce beers like no others on earth. Warning: if you are in the mood for hops and malt flavours, you will be disappointed. This beer tasting is powered by sour! I look forward to welcoming beer afficiandos to the Red (On)Lion on Tuesday and sharing the joys of Belgian beer!
