CAMRA podcast explores an essential beer ingredient, Hops

Release date: June 24, 2024

The Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) podcast Pubs. Pints. People. is back for a new episode dedicated to hops.

CAMRA’s popular Pubs. Pints. People. podcast shines a light over the world of beer, cider, pubs and clubs, as well as highlighting the consumer group’s campaigning efforts.

In the third episode of the podcast’s seventh series, the team explore one of the essential beer ingredients; hops. The episode features interviews with industry experts, including Will Rogers, the Technical Director for Charles Faram Hop Suppliers, based in Malvern. Charles Faram have been hop suppliers for over 150 years and Will talks in detail about growing hops and how significant they are when it comes to beer.

The hosts also chat with Lead Brewer Stephen Holland and Hop Garden Manager Matthew King of Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham. Brewing since 1992, Hogs Back was one of the first places in the country to grow hops and the pair give insight into the brewery’s famous hop gardens.

The team visit the family brewer Harvey’s at their historic brewery in Lewes to speak with Head Brewer Miles Jenner, getting up close to English hops and discuss how they are used in the brewing process.

The Head Brewer of Timothy Taylor’s, Andrew Leman, features in the new episode, talking about the brewery’s general approach to hops and their brewing process.

The podcast puts a spotlight on CAMRA’s ongoing campaigning efforts against misleading dispense. Following the release of Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company’s (CMBC) ‘Fresh Ale’ concept, which deliberately confuses customers into buying beer which isn’t cask conditioned, the team talk about their concerns and the fear that many more breweries may follow suit.

Two groundbreaking books published by CAMRA are also chewed over in this episode, Perry: A Drinker’s Guide by Adam Wells and Dr Christina Wade’s The Devil’s in the Draught Lines.

Perry: A Drinker’s Guide is the world’s first authoritative guide to perry, a magical yet relatively ignored drink with a vast unexplored history. The new publication is essential for those looking to start their journey into the world of perry. The Devil in the Draught Lines celebrates 1000 years of women in Britain’s brewing trade and includes interviews with key female figures working in the industry today. You can purchase both these great books from CAMRA’s online bookshop
