Gabe Cook, The Ciderologist, shines a light on the contemporary story of cider and its modern renaissance, in a new title published by CAMRA Books.
In Modern British Cider, global cider expert Gabe Cook highlights how the cider industry is throwing off negative pre-conceptions to showcase a drink, and a community, filled with high value and deep roots.
Modern British Cidercritically reflects on what the cider industry looks like in this modern age, where it has come from, and what key events over the last 60 years have informed the trends that are being experienced now. The book comes at cider’s most exciting time for centuries, whilst also battling through challenges preventing it from achieving its full potential.
The book is now available for pre-orders with copies officially available on 6 September 2021. The Ciderologist’s guide has been published by CAMRA after a successful Kickstarter campaign, which raised over £5,800to produce the book.
Readers can dive into the full range of flavours, processes, and occasions of cider, equal in breadth and diversity to that of beers, wines, and spirits. In addition, Modern British Cider includes a style guide to facilitate full awareness of the drink and to inform consumers.
From Aberdeen to Anglesey and Yeovil to Yorkshire, 101 cider makers from across England, Scotland and Wales are featured in the guide, along with producers from Guernsey, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland, demonstrating how cider is made across these isles.
Author Gabe Cook said: “I am excited to be teaming up with CAMRA to highlight the relevance of cider with this comprehensive guide, and to have the opportunity to explore the incredible cider landscape and diversity in the UK today.
“The industry still faces many challenges holding it back from achieving its full potential, such as the 35% Minimum Juice Content – a figure which does not uphold the integrity of cider – frequent misleading labelling, and the current duty legislation that prevents small makers from becoming larger, viable businesses. I hope this book lends a voice to these causes and readers will join my calls to support the industry.
“Britain is blessed with so much cider heritage, which we desperately need to conserve, but also wonderful innovation, fun and boundary-pushing boldness which we need to nurture. There truly is a cider for everyone.”
Modern British Cider is available for pre-order now for £15.99. It will officially go on sale from 6 September 2021.
