Pub Heritage Bulletin 251 Jan 2024

Release date: January 31, 2024

Three Star Heritage Pubs

West Yorkshire, GARDEN GATE, Leeds. We are pleased to report the news that the Garden Gate, acclaimed as ‘the jewel in the crown of pub architecture in Yorkshire’ is reopening on the 2nd of February. It has been closed for nearly two years and we reported in May last year on the damage to fittings and general deterioration it has suffered over recent times. The current building dates to 1902 and contains lavish Edwardian fittings and decoration that has remained virtually untouched since that time. It was listed grade II* in 2010 following an application by CAMRA - and we have made sure Historic England and Leeds City Council’s conservation officer are aware of the reopening. Both intend to make visits to assess the state of the interior. Thanks to Mike Hampshire and Dave Gamston for this welcome news.

Cheshire, WHITE LION, Barthomley. The II* listed White Lion closed in September after Marston’s 20 year lease of the pub ended. This fine timber framed building dates to 1614 and has been operating as a pub since then. The owners have stated that their overriding objective is that it should remain as a pub and have submitted a listed building application for general repairs to cover the framing and joinery and re-roofing. South Cheshire CAMRA report that an ACV has been applied for.

Mid Wales, CROWN & ANCHOR, Llanidloes. We reported in September on the formation of the Crown & Anchor Restoration Project (CARP) who were looking at options for community ownership for the pub which closed in November 2022. Simon Davies of Montgomery CAMRA has been in touch to let us know the positive news that CARP hosted an open day at the pub on 29th January to consult with the community. They have received a grant from the Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations to fund the consultation and an architect’s report. Good to hear things are happening. To keep up to date with the project - look up their facebook group: Crown & Anchor Restoration Project.

Greater Manchester, CEMETERY HOTEL, Rochdale. Good to hear from Ben Bootham of Lancashire Hospitality who took over the Cemetery in November. When budget allows Ben intends to reverse recent unsympathetic decoration including the black and grey painting of the internal woodwork. As well as Timothy Taylor’s Landlord they are now offering five changing beers.

Lancashire, BLACK HORSE, Preston. The Black Horse has won the Central Lancashire CAMRA Pub of the Year for the second year running – a great achievement. Congratulations to licensee Dan Taylor and all at the Black Horse. The award celebration will be held at the pub on Thursday 22nd February.

Two Star Heritage Pubs

Leicestershire, STAMFORD & WARRINGTON, Coalville. We reported in the September bulletin on the death of landlord Dave Stanton and the closure of the pub. Admiral Taverns have decided to put the freehold up for sale with Everard Cole with offers in the region of £195,000. For details see: Everard Cole . Thanks to Stephen Peck for this update.

Borders, OLD THISTLE INN, Westruther. The Old Thistle Inn has been closed for a couple of years and we now hear is up for sale with agents Cullen Kilshaw for £195,000. For details see: Cullen Kilshaw . This country pub has three small rooms containing a number of fittings that were salvaged from nearby Spottiswood House when it was demolished in the 1940s.

Hampshire, WHITE HORSE, Priors Dean. We reported in March 2023 of local concern over the imminent closure & refurbishment of the White Horse by owners Fullers. The pub has now reopened with new landlords Charlie Kearns & Eddie Tyrwhitt-Drake confirming that only very minor changes have taken place.

One Star Heritage Pubs

Worcestershire, BELL, Pensax. We reported last month that the community group intending to buy the Bell had been awarded a £275,000 grant by the Community Ownership Fund. However, it appears they have been gazumped – the current owners have entered into an ‘exclusivity contract’ with a third party to purchase the pub. This runs until mid-February. Whilst this must be a great disappointment for the group who have put in so much hard work, the new prospective owners, we understand, are intent on running a successful country pub. So we look forward to hearing of its reopening soon.

Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley, IMPERIAL BAR, Wishaw. The Imperial Bar is included on the inventory for its unusual arrangement of four snugs along the left-hand side, probably dating to the 1950s. A recent refurbishment has resulted in grey paint, black leather upholstery and vinyl tables. Furthermore we understand some of the old benches have been removed. Thanks to Oliver Morgan for this news.

Greater London North West, LORD SOUTHAMPTON, Kentish Town. We reported in May that the Lord Southampton was up for sale at auction having closed in January 2022. New owners Milegate have successfully applied for a new license despite resistance from local residents. Reopening date not yet known. See: Ham & High.
