Pub Heritage Bulletin 234 Aug 2022

Release date: August 31, 2022

West Midlands, WOODMAN, Birmingham. Sad news that the Woodman closed its doors on the 12th August. The pub posted the news on facebook: ‘We have battled hard to keep our favourite pub in the world open through adversity. But in the end, the combination of the relentless HS2 encroachment (which has begun to feel like there is no end in sight..), the pandemic, the cost of living crisis and the soaring fuel prices... has beaten us. And despite supporting the HS2 project, we've sadly not been able to secure any support ourselves.’ See: Birmingham Mail.
The pub was restored in 2013 and leased by The Woodman (2013) LLP, originally on a 25 year lease from the freehold owners – Birmingham City Council. It is yet to be seen if the remaining lease will be sold or if it will revert to the council. But it seems unlikely that it will re-open while the HS2 works are ongoing. Thanks to Ash Corbett-Collins and Hugh Steele for alerting us to this.

West Yorkshire, NEW BEEHIVE, Bradford. Dave Gamston reports: Having stripped out the serving counter and replaced all the front windows with uPVC, as previously reported, new owner Sakhawat (‘Shax’) Hussain has shunned approaches by CAMRA, as well as by the local press, to talk about his intentions for the building. Word is, however, that planning and listed building applications should be materialising in the next couple of months. Pressure will then be on Bradford Council to ‘do the right thing’ and CAMRA will be calling on them, hopefully with support from Bradford Civic Society, to insist on a continuing pub use.

Suffolk, NUTSHELL, Bury St Edmunds. Mick Slaughter reports that The Nutshell, which holds the title of the smallest pub in the country with internal dimensions of only 15 feet x 7ft, now has an outside drinking area. During fine weather a system of table service is in operation and customers are not allowed to sit in the pub itself. So be aware of this if you are planning a visit.

Gloucestershire & Bristol, KINGS HEAD, Bristol. We reported in June on the sale of the Kings Head, which has been shut since March 2021. The new owners have now leased the pub, and a listed building application for a minor refurbishment has been approved by the council. So hopefully it won’t be long until it re-opens. Thanks to Pete Bridle for this update.

Greater London South West, FALCON, Battersea. Jamie Hooper reports that the Falcon, owned by Nicholson’s, has been closed for a refurbishment. This impressive pub, dating from 1887, boasts the longest bar counter in Britain at 125ft. Due to re-open 2nd September according to their website.

Greater Manchester, SHAKESPEARE, Farnworth. Further to last bulletin, Don Chatwood reports that the Shakespeare failed to sell at auction. It had a reserve price of £390,000, which appeared unrealistic, considering that it was sold for £336,600 incl VAT in April. The future of the pub remains very uncertain.

Regional Inventory News

North Yorkshire, SPOTTED COW, Malton Closed for several years, this solid regional inventory pub (Grade II listed and once badged as one of Tetley’s elite ‘Heritage Inns’) has finally re-opened with new tenants and a bright new refit by its owners the Fitzwilliam Estate. See: Gazette Herald. Thanks to Dave Gamston for this.

Staffordshire, GOLDEN CUP, Hanley. Closed since 2017, the Golden Cup has now re-opened following a refurbishment, by new owner Steven Buckley. The pub was run by Steven’s grandparents from 1952 to 1991. See: Stoke Sentinel. Thanks to James Young for this good news.

West Midlands, PRINCE OF WALES, Birmingham. The Prince of Wales is sadly closing in September. Landlord Keith Marsden, who has run the pub for 15 years, blames the cost of living crisis, changing drinking habits, and the encroachment of nearby residential properties. Keith was awarded Licensee of the Year in 2015 by the British Institute of Innkeeping. Greene King, who own the pub, are actively seeking a new tennant. See: Birmingham Mail. Thanks to Hugh Steele for spotting this.

Northamptonshire, SHIPMANS, Northampton. We reported on the re-opening of Shipmans in the May bulletin. Mick Slaughter has since visited the pub and due to changes following the refurbishment, it is removed from the regional inventory. Although the layout is unaltered, the changes include: replacement of the majority of the panelling on the walls, new bar back, loss of one of the two sets of spirit cocks (only 5 known pubs with them), loss of one section of bar counter, loss of an interwar fireplace in the former barrel bar, and loss of fixed seating.
